Many people come to therapy having done a lot of insight work. They understand what happened. They know *why* they feel the way they do. And yet, their body still reacts — with anxiety, panic, shutdown, pain, or a constant sense of being on edge.

***Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is designed for that gap.***

ART is a trauma-informed, evidence-based therapy that helps the brain update how distressing experiences are stored, so emotional and physiological reactions can soften naturally — without forcing insight or requiring repeated exposure to painful memories.

## What Is Accelerated Resolution Therapy?

Accelerated Resolution Therapy is a structured therapeutic approach that works directly with the nervous system.

Rather than relying solely on talking through experiences or cognitively reframing them, ART supports the brain in reprocessing how distressing memories are held. Emotional responses, body sensations, and imagery connected to past experiences are gently guided toward resolution.

ART does **not** erase memory. You don’t forget what happened. What changes is the intensity — allowing memories to exist without overwhelming emotional or physical reactions.

Clients remain fully present, aware, and in control throughout the process.

---

## What Can ART Help With?

ART is commonly used to support people experiencing:

- Trauma and post-traumatic stress symptoms
- Anxiety and panic
- Phobias and specific fears
- Grief and loss
- Medical or birth trauma
- Chronic pain
- Chronic stress or nervous system dysregulation
- Feeling “stuck” despite insight-oriented therapy

ART is adaptable across many clinical concerns while maintaining a clear and contained therapeutic framework.

## How Does ART Work?

ART is grounded in established neuroscience, including memory reconsolidation and bilateral stimulation.

Sessions use gentle eye movements, guided imagery, and structured processing to help the brain update how distressing experiences are stored.

Key elements include:

**Eye Movements**
Gentle left-right eye movements stimulate the brain’s natural processing systems, similar to those used in EMDR.

**Memory Reconsolidation**
The brain is supported in updating how past experiences are stored, allowing emotional charge to soften without erasing memory.

**Voluntary Image Replacement (VIR)**
Clients are guided to replace distressing imagery with imagery that feels safe, neutral, or empowering — allowing resolution without re-traumatization or prolonged exposure.

Sessions are guided, contained, and paced with care.

## How ART Differs From Traditional Talk Therapy

Traditional talk therapy often emphasizes insight, narrative exploration, and cognitive understanding as the primary drivers of change.

ART focuses instead on *how experiences are stored in the brain and body*.

Many people find ART helpful when they intellectually understand their experiences but continue to feel emotionally or physically reactive in the present. ART can be used as a standalone approach or integrated alongside relational, cognitive, or somatic therapies.

## ART vs. EMDR: A Brief Comparison

ART and EMDR are both evidence-based, eye-movement-based trauma therapies grounded in neuroscience. They share important similarities — and also meaningful differences.

- **Structure:**
EMDR follows a standardized eight-phase protocol. ART uses a more flexible, directive framework while maintaining clear structure.
- **Exposure and Narrative Detail:**
EMDR often involves detailed verbal recall of traumatic material. ART does not require detailed recounting, which many clients find less emotionally taxing.
- **Use of Imagery:**
ART includes Voluntary Image Replacement, allowing intentional shifts toward safety or empowerment. EMDR does not formally include image replacement.

Both approaches are effective. The best fit often depends on individual needs, preferences, and how the nervous system responds to different forms of processing.

## Research and Evidence Base

Accelerated Resolution Therapy is grounded in well-established principles of neuroscience, including bilateral stimulation and memory reconsolidation.

ART has demonstrated effectiveness in reducing symptoms related to trauma, anxiety, and depression, with research showing outcomes comparable to other established trauma therapies — often in fewer sessions.

ART continues to evolve as part of the growing field of trauma-informed, nervous-system-based psychotherapy.

I was trained by the founder in this brief but very effective therapy practice. You can learn more from the founder of ART in this video. Skip to the 3-minute mark to see the impact on a real client of Laney’s (the founder of Accelerated Resolution Therapy).

## Is ART Right for You?

ART may be a good fit if you’re looking for an approach that addresses emotional and physiological responses — not just thoughts or behaviors.

Many people explore ART after realizing that insight alone hasn’t fully resolved the emotional charge their body continues to carry.

## Let’s Explore…

You deserve support that honors both your experiences and your nervous system. If traditional therapy hasn’t fully resolved the emotional charge you carry, Accelerated Resolution Therapy may offer a different path forward.
