# When Your Brain Remembers Facts But Not Where You Put Your Keys

Here’s something that might sound familiar: you can recite entire movie scripts, remember obscure historical dates, or explain complex systems in detail—but completely blank on what you did last Tuesday. Or maybe you vividly remember that embarrassing thing from middle school, but can’t recall what someone just told you five minutes ago.

This isn’t about having a “bad memory.” What’s actually happening involves two different memory systems that work in pretty distinct ways: semantic memory and episodic memory. For autistic and ADHD brains, these systems often function differently than they do for neurotypical folks, and understanding this difference can make a lot of daily life make more sense.

**The Two Types of Long-Term Memory**

Semantic memory is all about facts and general knowledge—the kind of information that exists outside of personal experience. It’s knowing that Paris is the capital of France, or how photosynthesis works, or what your favorite band’s discography looks like. This type of memory doesn’t come with a timestamp or location tag. You just *know* it.

Episodic memory, on the other hand, is your mental time machine. It’s the memory of specific events you personally experienced, complete with the context of when and where they happened, who was there, and how you felt. It’s remembering your first day at a new job, what you ate for breakfast yesterday, or that conversation you had with your friend last week.

**The Autistic Memory Profile**

Research consistently shows something interesting about memory in autistic people. Autistic individuals often have strong semantic memory—excelling at remembering facts, details, and specific areas of interest—while episodic memory, especially for social or emotional experiences, tends to be more challenging.

Studies have found that autistic adults can accurately remember semantic information (like the chronological order of historical figures) but struggle more with episodic tasks (like remembering a random sequence they saw once on a screen). This isn’t a deficit in intelligence or attention—it’s a different way the memory systems are organized.

Here’s what makes this particularly meaningful: autistic people can have difficulty recalling specific episodic memories and episodic future thinking. Executive functions like working memory and inhibitory control, which can be different in autism, play a role in how episodic memories get retrieved and reconstructed.

What does this look like in real life? An autistic person might remember extensive details about their special interest spanning years of accumulated knowledge, but find it hard to recall the specifics of a social interaction from last week. They might know a tremendous amount of factual information but struggle to remember personal experiences with the same richness of contextual detail.

Some researchers suggest this relates to how autistic individuals process context and associations. Autistic people may rely less on semantic associative networks—those conventional word-to-word connections neurotypical brains use automatically—and this might actually allow for more abstract but robust associations. That’s not a bug; it’s a different operating system with its own strengths.

**The ADHD Memory Paradox**

The ADHD memory story is fascinatingly different, and in some ways, almost the opposite of what people expect.

Research on children with ADHD found something surprising: while they performed worse on working memory tasks, they performed as well as or even better than their peers on long-term episodic memory tasks, showing particularly detailed memory for personally experienced past events. Parents in these studies rated their ADHD kids lower on semantic memory (like remembering names, spelling, and math facts) but rated them as high or higher on memory for events.

So what’s going on here? Studies show that people with ADHD may have more difficulty with episodic memory tasks involving neutral information, but their memory significantly improves when the content has emotional significance. The emotional charge seems to act like a highlighter in the brain.

Research indicates that ADHD is associated with challenges in the formation and retrieval of episodic memory, particularly when people can’t rely on external cues and have to retrieve information freely. Memory deficits are often seen in the encoding stage. But once something makes it into long-term storage—especially if it had emotional weight—it can stick around with remarkable clarity.

This helps explain why someone with ADHD might forget they have a dentist appointment (neutral, not emotionally charged) but remember in vivid detail an argument from three years ago or every lyric to songs that meant something to them. It’s not about caring more or less; it’s about how emotional salience creates stronger encoding.

**When You’re AuDHD: The Memory Tug-of-War**

And then there’s what happens when both conditions exist together—what many people call AuDHD. Research shows that among children with ADHD, about 33% also have autism, and among autistic children, about 10% also have ADHD. Estimates suggest that 50-70% of autistic people may also have ADHD.

When autism and ADHD coexist in the same brain, you get something that can feel like an internal contradiction. One perspective from people living with both conditions describes how autism can make you an extreme rule follower while ADHD makes it hard to follow rules consistently. The memory experience mirrors this push-pull dynamic.

For someone with AuDHD, the memory landscape can feel particularly confusing:

You might have the autistic pattern of strong semantic memory (knowing endless facts about your interests) combined with ADHD’s struggle with semantic memory (constantly forgetting names, dates, or where you learned something). Result? You know *everything* about your special interest but can’t remember basic facts about things that don’t capture your focus.

Then there’s episodic memory. Autism tends toward weaker episodic recall overall, especially for social interactions. ADHD tends toward vivid episodic memory for emotionally charged events but poor memory for neutral ones. Put them together and you get: incredibly detailed memories of intense emotional experiences (especially negative ones that trigger RSD) but huge gaps around everyday events and interactions—unless they’re about your special interest, in which case you remember everything.

Research on AuDHD shows that working memory scores in the combined group tend to be lower than in autism or ADHD alone, suggesting more challenges in executive functioning overall. This means the working memory struggles that both conditions can involve get compounded rather than canceled out.

Studies indicate that people with AuDHD often have more severe impairment in social processing, motor skills, and adaptive and executive functioning, possibly because the conditions’ opposing symptoms interact with each other. Your autistic side might thrive on routine (which helps with memory by creating predictable contexts), but your ADHD side makes following routines nearly impossible. Your ADHD might create hyperfocus on emotionally resonant experiences, but your autistic processing differences mean you struggle to place those memories in proper social context.

It can feel like your memory is constantly at war with itself. You might:

- Remember entire Wikipedia pages about dinosaurs but not what you had for lunch
- Have crystal-clear memories of every time you’ve been criticized but can’t remember positive feedback
- Forget conversations you had yesterday but remember every detail of a documentary you watched five years ago
- Know facts about your interests but struggle to retrieve them when you need them because working memory won’t cooperate
- Have intense emotional memories that lack the contextual details that would help you make sense of them

People with both conditions describe being easily overwhelmed but feeling unable to slow down and recharge, struggling between preference for routines and boredom with sameness, and craving social stimulation but finding it hard to navigate social situations. The memory system reflects these same tensions.

**What This Means for Daily Life**

Understanding these memory differences isn’t just academic—it has real implications for how we support ourselves and others.

For autistic individuals, recognizing that episodic memory challenges are part of the neurological profile (not personal failure) can reduce shame around things like:

- Difficulty remembering conversations or social interactions
- Needing written reminders for events or commitments
- Struggling with “What did you do today?” questions even when the day was full
- Challenges with autobiographical storytelling

Research has shown that providing structured support during memory recall—like specific prompts rather than open-ended questions—can significantly help autistic people access episodic memories. This means better questions get better answers, not because of effort but because of how the retrieval system works.

For ADHD brains, understanding the emotional-encoding connection explains:

- Why you remember some things in excessive detail but completely forget others
- How rejection sensitive dysphoria can create involuntary, intrusive memories of negative experiences
- Why reminder systems and external scaffolding are tools, not crutches
- Why semantic memory tasks (like learning definitions or multiplication tables) might need different strategies

For AuDHD folks, it means recognizing that you’re not failing at both conditions—you’re navigating a genuinely more complex memory system where opposing forces create unique challenges. Your needs might include:

- Extra external support systems because working memory is particularly strained
- Strategies that account for both need-for-routine and difficulty-maintaining-routine
- Validation that the emotional intensity of memories isn’t “too much”
- Recognition that your semantic memory might be simultaneously phenomenal (for interests) and frustrating (for practical information)
- Understanding that the gaps in your episodic memory aren’t personal failings

**Moving Forward with Self-Compassion**

Whether you’re autistic, have ADHD, or both, these represent real neurological differences in how memory systems function. These aren’t character flaws, moral failings, or things you can just “try harder” to fix. Some research suggests that difficulties with declarative memory (which includes both semantic and episodic memory) may be compensated for using visual-perceptual abilities, which has positive implications for how we approach learning and memory support.

When we understand *how* our brains work—not just that they work “differently”—we can build systems that actually support our neurology rather than fighting against it. That might look like voice memos instead of written notes, visual schedules, emotion-regulation skills to manage intrusive memories, body doubling to help with routine-maintenance, or partnership with others who can help fill in episodic gaps.

Your memory isn’t broken. It’s just speaking a different dialect—or in the case of AuDHD, speaking two different dialects at once, sometimes in the middle of an argument with each other. Once you learn both languages, life gets a lot easier to navigate.
