# Your Body Knows Before Your Brain Does: Why Yoga Is a Smart Supplement to Therapy for ADHD and Autism

There’s a version of self-care advice that neurodivergent adults have heard so many times it has lost all meaning. *Take breaks. Practice mindfulness. Try yoga.*

It sounds simple. Sometimes it sounds dismissive. As if the right breathing pattern would fix what years of misdiagnosis, masking, and chronic stress have built into the nervous system.

So I want to be direct here: this is not that article.

This is about the actual science behind why yoga works differently for neurodivergent nervous systems — and why it can be a meaningful *addition* to therapy, not a replacement for it.

**What’s Happening in the Nervous System**

If you have ADHD or Autism, your nervous system is not broken. But it is operating under conditions that most environments were not designed for.

Research shows that Autistic and ADHD individuals often have low vagal tone — meaning the vagus nerve, which governs the balance between activation and calm, struggles to adapt flexibly between those states. This is sometimes described as a “rigid” nervous system. Not rigid as a character flaw. Rigid as in: harder to shift from one state to another. Slower to return to baseline after stress. More likely to stay stuck.

The vagus nerve connects your brain to your heart, lungs, and gut. When it’s functioning well — what clinicians call high vagal tone — you can move through stress and come back to a regulated state with more ease. This flexibility is measured by heart rate variability (HRV): less variability means less adaptability. More variability means a nervous system that can respond and recover.

For many neurodivergent adults, the nervous system has been running on high alert for a long time. Masking, sensory overload, and repeated experiences of not fitting in aren’t just emotionally exhausting — they are physiologically costly.

**Where Yoga Comes In**

Yoga — specifically the combination of movement, breathwork, and directed attention — works on the nervous system through multiple pathways at once.

Mindfulness practices, especially those involving breathwork, have been shown to activate the vagus nerve, increase HRV, and improve vagal tone. They also support interoception — the ability to sense internal states like hunger, tension, or emotional activation — which many Autistic and ADHD people struggle with.

That last point matters more than it might seem.

Many autistic people experience interoceptive signals as either muted or amplified. Some don’t notice internal cues until they become extreme — feeling dizzy from hunger, or not recognizing they’re overwhelmed until they’re already in shutdown. For people with ADHD, the picture is similar: hyperfocus can mute body signals entirely, until the body forces the issue.

Yoga doesn’t fix interoception. But consistent practice creates a regular opportunity to notice — without judgment, without a task to complete. Over time, that noticing builds capacity.

**What the Research Actually Shows**

The research on yoga and neurodevelopment is still growing, and it’s worth being honest about that. Most studies are small, and much of the work has focused on children rather than adults. That said, the findings are consistent enough to take seriously.

A 2024 systematic review of yoga as a supportive treatment for ADHD found that yoga shows meaningful promise as an adjunctive intervention — especially for reducing hyperactivity, improving attention, and supporting emotional regulation — with particular appeal given the side effects associated with stimulant medication.

Pranayama, the yogic breathwork component, appears especially effective for reducing hyperactivity and distractibility. Evidence suggests that vagal activation during meditation correlates with changes in the brain regions involved in threat appraisal, interoception, and emotional flexibility.

A 2024 randomized controlled trial found that an 8-week yoga intervention for autistic children produced reductions in problem behaviors and improved motor coordination — areas that directly affect daily functioning and quality of life.

Across the ASD literature, researchers note that yoga may benefit autistic people both directly — through impact on core features like sensory regulation — and indirectly, by addressing common co-occurring conditions like anxiety, depression, and sleep disruption.

**Why This Works Alongside Therapy, Not Instead of It**

Therapy works at the level of meaning, pattern, and relationship. It helps you understand why you respond the way you do, and it gives you language and context for your experience. That matters enormously.

But talk therapy primarily happens from the neck up.

Vagus nerve practices — and yoga is one of them — are most effective with repetition rather than intensity. The goal isn’t to force calm. It’s to train the body to recognize safety over time. That’s a different kind of work than what happens in a therapy session. And for neurodivergent people who have spent years overriding their body’s signals just to get through the day, that retraining can be genuinely meaningful.

When clients are doing both, I often see something shift. The insights from therapy start to land differently — not just as ideas, but as felt experiences. The nervous system becomes more available. Windows of tolerance expand. Regulation becomes less effortful.

That’s not a coincidence.

**A Few Honest Caveats**

Yoga is not accessible to everyone, and it hasn’t been adapted equitably across bodies, abilities, or sensory profiles. Not all yoga is created equal for neurodivergent people. A loud, fast-paced vinyasa class with an instructor who talks constantly may be the opposite of regulating.

Sensory-friendly yoga — slower pacing, predictable structure, options for props, low-pressure environments — makes a significant difference. For ADHD and Autistic adults specifically, yoga nidra (guided relaxation that doesn’t require sitting still or maintaining focus in a traditional sense) has shown promise in supporting interoception, self-regulation, and sleep. It’s worth exploring what form fits.

And finally: yoga is not a substitute for medication, therapy, or any other evidence-based treatment. It’s a supplement. A tool. One that happens to be low-cost, low-risk, and accessible in many forms.

**The Bottom Line**

Your nervous system has been doing a lot of work. Some of it necessary. Some of it learned long ago when there weren’t other options.

Yoga, done in a way that actually fits your body and your brain, can be one piece of resetting that — slowly, incrementally, without pressure to perform wellness.

That’s not a small thing.
