Feeding the Neurodivergent Brain: Why “Just Eat Better” Doesn’t Work
Brain Fog, Sensory Aversion, and the Misunderstood Reasons for
Your brain is expensive to run. At rest, it uses about a fifth of your body’s total energy, even though it only makes up around two percent of your body weight. That number holds for every brain. But for a neurodivergent brain managing executive dysfunction, sensory processing, and a nervous system that’s often working overtime, running on empty shows up fast and it shows up hard.
This isn’t about willpower. It’s about fuel.
The problem isn’t discipline. It’s access.
If you have ADHD, you may not feel hunger the way other people describe it. Research on interoception, the sense that lets you notice what’s happening inside your body, shows that ADHD brains often register hunger late, faintly, or not at all until things have gone sideways. Hyperfocus makes this worse. When your attention is fully absorbed in something, hunger signals can get filtered out almost completely. You don’t skip lunch on purpose. You look up at 4pm and realize you haven’t eaten since breakfast, and now you’re shaky, foggy, and irritable.
Autistic adults deal with a related but different version of this. Sensory processing differences can make eating itself hard, certain textures, smells, or the physical sensation of fullness can be genuinely distressing. Autistic burnout adds another layer. When your system is already flooded, the signal for hunger has to compete with everything else your body is trying to process, and it often loses.
Neither of these is a character flaw. Both are neurological.
What happens when the brain runs low
Once blood sugar drops, executive function drops with it. This isn’t a vague wellness claim. Studies using controlled glucose testing show that when blood sugar falls, so does working memory, attention, and the ability to organize and prioritize tasks, the exact skills that were already harder to access before you got hungry. Sharp blood sugar spikes and crashes from quick carbs alone follow the same pattern: a short lift, then a steeper drop than if you hadn’t eaten at all.
So the crash you feel by mid-afternoon isn’t just tiredness. It’s your brain running on a fuel source that spiked and disappeared, on top of a system that may already be working with less capacity to begin with.
A different starting point
Neuroaffirming nutrition doesn’t start with meal plans or rules. It starts with a much lower bar: get fuel in, in whatever form is actually accessible to you today. A fed brain is a successfully fueled brain, full stop. Here’s what that looks like in practice.
Low-effort fuel counts. Convenience foods, meal replacement shakes, pre-chopped produce, protein bars. If cooking feels impossible today, these aren’t a failure. They’re the tool that keeps your brain online.
Pair your macros. Quick carbs alone (crackers, plain pasta, toast) spike and crash. Add a protein or fat, cheese, nut butter, Greek yogurt, and you flatten that curve. This is the single easiest change that makes the biggest difference in how stable you feel two hours later.
Build around your sensory needs, not against them. If mindful eating instructions make things worse, skip them. Eat with headphones on. Eat in low light. Stim while you eat. The goal is food getting in, not performing a particular style of eating.
Externalize what your body won’t reliably tell you. If you can’t count on hunger cues to show up on time, don’t wait for them. Outsource the task of monitoring your hunger to your environment: use alarms, visual timers, or keep snacks in plain sight on your desk to act as external cues when your interoception isn't reliably signaling a need for fuel.
When you’re in burnout, lower the bar further. Nutrition drinks, protein bars, anything that gets calories and some protein into your system. This is not a lesser form of eating. In a burnout or crash state, it may be the only form of eating that’s actually available to you, and that makes it the right one.
The bottom line
Under-fueling isn’t a discipline problem for a neurodivergent brain. It’s a mismatch between how your body signals need and how much energy your brain requires to function well. Once you stop treating every meal as a test you can pass or fail, and start treating food as fuel you owe your nervous system, the whole picture gets simpler. Not perfect. Simpler.
