Autistic Inertia: Starting, Stopping, and the In-Between
It's ADHD-only or autism-only experience, but the why behind it differs, and so do the most effective strategies.
If you’ve ever sat in front of your computer for an hour without writing a single line — not because you didn’t want to, but because something between your brain and your hands just... wouldn’t connect — that’s inertia at work. And if you’ve also been so deep in a debugging rabbit hole at midnight that you genuinely couldn’t stop even when you needed to sleep, that’s inertia too. Same thing, different direction.

Autistic inertia isn’t laziness, avoidance, or poor time management. It’s a neurological pattern where the brain has real difficulty shifting states — whether that means getting into motion, getting out of it, or changing gears mid-task.
Think of it like Newton’s first law applied to your nervous system. Objects at rest stay at rest. Objects in motion stay in motion. Except the “object” is your brain, and the forces acting on it are executive function, sensory input, interest, and a whole ecosystem of internal and external cues.
For autistic people, that state-shifting process takes more — more time, more energy, more the-right-conditions.
The Three Flavors Most Tech Workers Notice
Starting inertia is the wall before the work. You have the ticket open. You know what needs to happen. You might even want to do it. But initiating feels like pushing through wet concrete. This is especially common with tasks that feel ambiguous, unfamiliar, or low-interest — even when the stakes are high.
Stopping inertia is the flip side and honestly can be just as disruptive. You’re in flow state — genuinely in it — and being pulled out feels almost physically wrong. Meetings, Slack pings, end-of-day cutoffs — these don’t just interrupt the work, they interrupt the state, and re-entry is expensive.
Transition inertia is the middle one people talk about less. Switching between task types — say, going from deep focus coding to a standup to documentation — can feel like context-switching with no RAM left. Each switch has a cost, and those costs stack.
The ADHD Overlap (Because It’s Complicated)
Many autistic people also have ADHD, and inertia shows up differently when both are present. ADHD can make starting and stopping harder through impulsivity, hyperfocus, and difficulty with boredom — but it can also sometimes create urgency that bypasses starting inertia at the last minute. The interaction between the two is genuinely individual. What works as a workaround for one person might backfire for another.

What This Can Look Like on the Job

- Taking much longer to “get going” on a task type you haven’t done recently
- Staying late not from dedication but because leaving feels as hard as arriving did
None of these are character flaws. They’re inertia.
Strategies That Actually Help
These aren’t cures — they’re friction-reducers. The goal is lowering the activation energy needed to shift states, or building structure that makes shifts more predictable.
For starting: Ritual and routine are genuinely underrated here. A consistent “entry sequence” — same music, same first action, same environment cue — can help the brain recognize it’s time to transition into work mode. Some people use body-doubling (working alongside someone else, virtually or in person). Some need to write one tiny thing first, even something that doesn’t matter, just to break the seal.
Task initiation also responds well to specificity. “Work on the auth module” is hard to start. “Open the auth file and read the first function” is easier. Breaking the entry point down to something almost absurdly small can bypass the wall.
For stopping: External anchors help more than internal ones. Alarms, calendar blocks with actual end times, or agreeing with a colleague on a stopping point ahead of time. Transition warnings — a 10-minute alert before a meeting, for example — give the brain time to begin preparing rather than being yanked.
Some people find it helpful to leave a visible “thread” before stopping: a comment in the code, a note about exactly where they are, even an open browser tab. It signals to future-brain that re-entry is possible and the context isn’t fully lost.
For transitions: Buffer time between different task types is legitimate support, not a luxury. Autistic tech workers especially benefit from batching similar tasks together when possible and protecting deep work blocks from interruption. If you have any influence over your calendar, guarding that time is worth advocating for.
A Note on Self-Understanding
Recognizing inertia for what it is — a neurological reality, not a personal failure — tends to shift things. Not because the inertia disappears, but because shame takes up a lot of energy, and that energy is better spent on actual workarounds.
You’re not broken. Your brain moves differently between states. That’s real, it’s documented, and it’s workable.
