Haa Tuwunáagu Yís: Honoring Tlingit Wisdom in Modern Healing

The Tlingit phrase "Haa tuwunáagu yís" – for healing our spirit – captures something profound about the human experience of healing. It reminds us that deep within each of us lies an inherent wisdom, a knowing about what we need to thrive and feel whole. This ancient understanding points to two fundamental truths that guide our therapeutic work: we all need to belong, and we all possess the capacity for self-efficacy – the power to create positive change in our own lives.

The Wisdom You Already Carry

You arrive at therapy not as a broken person needing to be fixed, but as someone who carries within them everything needed for healing. Your experiences, your struggles, even your pain – all of these have shaped a unique inner wisdom that knows your path forward. Whether your brain works differently than the neurotypical majority, whether your gender identity expands beyond traditional categories, or whether your life experiences have given you perspectives that others might not understand – all of these aspects of who you are contain valuable wisdom. My role is not to provide you with answers from the outside, but to help you access the profound knowing that already exists within you.

This perspective transforms the therapeutic relationship. Rather than positioning me as the expert who diagnoses and treats, we become collaborative partners in uncovering your inherent strengths, values, and capacity for growth. You are the expert on your own life, and therapy becomes a space where that expertise is honored and amplified.

Belonging: The Foundation of Healing

At the heart of most emotional pain lies a fundamental disruption in our sense of belonging to ourselves, to others, to something meaningful beyond our struggles. When we feel isolated, misunderstood, or disconnected from our authentic selves, distress naturally follows.

Healing happens when we restore these connections. In our work together, we explore:

Belonging to Yourself – Learning to befriend all parts of who you are, including the aspects you may have learned to hide or reject. This means developing self-compassion and recognizing that your struggles make sense given your experiences. Whether you're neurodivergent, questioning or affirming your identity, or navigating other aspects of your authentic self, this process involves embracing what makes you uniquely you rather than trying to fit into narrow definitions of "normal."

Belonging in Relationships – Understanding how to maintain your authentic self while creating genuine connections with others. This involves learning healthy boundaries, effective communication, and the courage to be vulnerable.

Belonging to Purpose – Discovering what brings meaning to your life and how your unique gifts can contribute to something larger than yourself. This might involve career fulfillment, creative expression, service to others, or spiritual practice.

Self-Efficacy: Your Power to Create Change

Self-efficacy – the belief in your ability to influence your own life and outcomes – is perhaps the most powerful predictor of mental health and life satisfaction. When you recognize your own agency, even small changes can create ripple effects that transform your entire experience. This is especially important for those who may have been told their neurodivergent traits need to be "fixed" or whose gender identity has been questioned or invalidated. Building self-efficacy means recognizing that you are the expert on your own experience and that your way of being in the world has value.

This doesn't mean you're responsible for everything that happens to you. Rather, it means recognizing where you do have power and learning to exercise that power skillfully. In therapy, we identify:

Your Existing Strengths – The qualities, skills, and resources you've already developed, often without realizing it. These become the foundation for building greater self-efficacy.

Your Values as Your Compass – Understanding what truly matters to you provides direction for making decisions and taking action that aligns with your authentic self.

Your Capacity for Growth – Recognizing that challenges are opportunities to develop new capabilities, and that resilience is built through navigating difficulties, not avoiding them.

The Four Dimensions of Inner Wisdom

Your inner wisdom operates across four interconnected dimensions:

Physical Wisdom – Your body holds profound intelligence about what you need for health and vitality. Learning to listen to physical sensations, energy levels, and bodily needs helps you make choices that support your overall well-being.

Emotional Wisdom – Emotions are messengers, providing valuable information about your needs, values, and relationships. Rather than trying to eliminate difficult emotions, we learn to understand their messages and respond skillfully.

Mental Wisdom – Your mind's ability to make meaning, solve problems, and envision possibilities is a tremendous resource. We work to harness this capacity while learning to quiet unhelpful mental patterns.

Spiritual Wisdom – Whether through formal religious practice, connection with nature, or a personal sense of the sacred, this dimension involves your relationship with what gives life meaning and purpose.

Healing as Restoration, Not Transformation

True healing rarely involves becoming someone entirely different. Instead, it's about removing the barriers that prevent you from being who you authentically are. It's about restoring your natural capacity for joy, connection, growth, and contribution. This means honoring your neurodivergent traits as strengths rather than deficits, celebrating your authentic gender expression, and recognizing that what society might label as "different" often contains your greatest gifts.

This restoration happens when you:

  • Reconnect with your core values and authentic self
  • Develop skills for managing life's inevitable challenges
  • Build relationships that support and celebrate who you are
  • Create a sense of purpose that utilizes your unique gifts
  • Learn to trust your inner guidance system

Your Journey of Self-Discovery

In our therapeutic work, you'll discover that you already possess remarkable wisdom about your own healing. You know what drains your energy and what restores it. You understand, perhaps better than anyone, what your struggles are really about beneath the surface. You have insights about what you need to feel safe, valued, and alive.

My role is to create a space where this wisdom can emerge clearly. Through careful listening, thoughtful questions, and evidence-based techniques, we'll help you access and trust your own inner knowing. We'll build your confidence in your ability to navigate challenges and create positive change.

The Ripple Effect of Your Healing

When you heal – when you restore your sense of belonging and develop genuine self-efficacy – the benefits extend far beyond your individual life. Your increased capacity for authenticity, compassion, and resilience becomes a gift to everyone around you. Your children learn what healthy relationships look like. Your friends experience your increased presence and emotional availability. Your community benefits from your contributions and engagement.

This is the profound truth embedded in "Haa tuwunáagu yís" – healing our spirit creates healing in the world around us. Not because we're trying to fix others, but because our wholeness naturally contributes to the wholeness of our communities.

Beginning Your Journey

If you're ready to explore the wisdom that lives within you, to strengthen your sense of belonging and build your capacity for positive change, therapy can be a powerful catalyst for this journey. Together, we'll create a space where your authentic self can emerge, where your strengths can be recognized and developed, and where your natural capacity for healing can flourish.

You don't need to have all the answers when you begin. The willingness to explore, to be curious about your own experience, and to trust in your capacity for growth is often all that's needed to start.
